Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), a truly dominant gas major, has been turning out disciplined financial performance with excellence in project management, service quality and customer satisfaction. Building on with business strength, GAIL has set its future vision to be a “Dominant company in Natural gas business, with a significant global presence, integrated in energy and petrochemicals”.
GAIL’s foray into petrochemicals, with its state-of-the-art production facilities at Uttar Pradesh Petrochemical Complex (UPPC), Pata marks it step towards integration of its business, to fulfil its mission to be a global business organisation.
In addition to Petrochmicals, GAIL's other areas of Business includes :
- Gas Distribution and Marketing : We are the largest organization in India handling post-exploration activities relating to transmission, processing, distribution and marketing of natural gas and its fractions and by-products.
- Trunk Transmission and Distribution : GAIL owns and operates one of the largest pipelines in this part of the world - the 2300 km long HBJ pipeline system. The system has currently carries 33.4 MMSCMD gas from the Western coast of India to the Central and Northern parts of country.
- Regional Transmission and Distribution: Following the completion of the HBJ Pipeline and its successful commissioning, GAIL has gradually expanded the gas business especially in the western and southern parts of India. As on date GAIL is successfully operating and maintaining more than 1600 Kms of regional pipeline in the area of Mumbai, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Assam and Tripura.
- Gas Retailing : GAIL has also formed joint venture companies for supplies to households, limited commercial users and for the transport sectorin select areas.
- LPG : GAIL today has seven LPG Plants two at Vijaipur and one at Vaghodia, and one each in Lakwa (Assam) and Usar (Maharashtra), Auraiya (U.P.) and Gandhar (Gujarat) producing over 1 million TPA of LPG and other liquid hydrocarbons. The LPG is sold in bulk to LPG retailing companies and the other liquid hydrocarbon products are sold to industries.
- Joint Ventures : As GAIL takes all possible initiatives to further expand its business, joint ventures with other big companies is always on the high priority list.

Our petrochemical business include a range of high molecular weight HDPE grades from a dedicated HDPE plant, based on MITSUI technology as also a range of HDPE/LLDPE grades from its swing Plant, based on NOVACOR technology.
G-lex HDPE :
G-lex is the brand name of HDPE manufactured and marketed by GAIL. G-lex Grades are manufactured at GAIL, UPPC, Pata adopting process technology of Mitsui, Japan. G-lex High Density Polyethylene manufactured by GAIL, is based on low pressure polymerization process of MITSUI, Japan.
G-lene HDPE & LLDPE :
G-lene is the brand name of HDPE & LLDPE manufactured and marketed by GAIL. G-lene Grades are manufactured at GAIL, UPPC, Pata adopting process technology of Novacor, Canada. G-lene range of HDPE & LLDPE grades is based on "Sclairtech" solution process technology of Nova Chemicals, Canada.

Summary
The Company, possessing a well developed and efficient infrastructure, was established as a wholly owned Company of the Government of India in August, 1984 with 100% equity held by the Goverment of India.
Today GAIL owns and operates over 4 000 km of pipeline and has about 95% market share in the Natural Gas business in India. Also, more than half of the total Urea production in India is Gas-based out of which GAIL contributes more than 90%, thus making a significant contribution to India's agriculture sector also. During the year 2000-01, GAIL registered a turnover of Rs 100.59 billion with profits of Rs. 11.26 billion.

GAIL has an IS0-9002 and ISO-14001 (for adherence to environmental standards) certification for its pipeline system and LPG plants. For the past five years the Company has been winning the 'Excellent Performance Award' from the Indian Government.
